Anthropology at UFSCar

The Postgraduate Program in Social Anthropology (PPGAS) at the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar) was recommended by CAPES (Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel, a foundation linked to Brazil’s Ministry of Education) in October 2006, and began its activities as a master’s degree in the first semester of 2007. In 2008, CAPES recommended the opening of the doctorate degree, whose activities began in 2009 with grade 4. In 2013, recognizing the dynamism and excellence of the Program, CAPES raised the grade to 5. Thus, we are a still recent Program, but already with national recognition, evidenced by the rapid progression in CAPES’ evaluations.

Currently, we are ten permanent professors and three collaborators, distributed in three lines of research and carrying out several research projects. The main objective of the Program is to offer specialized training at the postgraduate level that allows the professionals to be trained to carry out qualified activities in the area. Thus, it seeks to both meet the demand for student and professional training more specific and appropriate to the lines of research developed by the faculty of the Anthropology area at UFSCar, as well as to strengthen the growing expansion of teaching, research and extension activities of professors of the area, within their own academic projects and that brings together the academic and institutional conditions for its greater consolidation and autonomy.
